PONDS OF SLIVIA
An enchanted place of cultural and naturalistic importance.
These are the Ponds of Slivia, located of course in the homonymous typical karst village. They represent a very popular sunday destination among the inhabitants, especially for walks or tasty picnics surrounded by nature.
The ponds are located in the area of the village called “Dol”, translated as the valley. There you can admire 3 ponds: the largest one is called in slovene “Ta velik kau”, literally The big pond; follows the Medium-sized pond or in original language “Srednji kau”; at the end we have the smallest pond, called “Kalič” that we can translate as little pond. In the past, each of them had a specific function: the peasants brought their beasts to The big pond to drink water; the ladies went to the medium-sized pond to wash their clothes; at the Kalič, located just a couple of meters away from the others, local people provided themselves with water for house use.
When the agricultural activities were mainly abandoned, even the ponds were no longer cared for. Just in 2002 the local organization restored the area and positioned an information board on the site.
The Ponds of Slivia offers its visitors also the opportunity to admire interesting animal and plant species.
