THE BARCOLANA

The most representative event of the city of Trieste.

We are talking about the event “Barcolana”, the regatta that in 2018 broke all records of participants, becoming the largest speed race between boats in the world. The participants od the 50th edition were 2,689 as specified by the Guinness World Records.

As anticipated, the “Barcolana” is a competition between sailing boats that takes place annually on the second Sunday of October. During this period many people reach Trieste from all over the world to participate to the regatta or simply to enjoy the extraordinary view of the Adriatic Sea crowded with boats. The event starts already few days before the official competition, then the Barcolana Village opens involving the whole city and offering its visitors stands for all tastes.

he competition takes its name from the the triestine district called Barcola, the neighborhood that offers its citizens various bathing areas along its waterfront. And if you wonder why this event takes place in Trieste, the answer is simple: “bora”. The city is in fact characterizes by this strong wind, whose gusts can even exceed the speed of 150 km/h.

It is possible to admire the regatta from various parts of the city and the Karst, from the Shores of Trieste to the promenade of Muggia or the Napoleonic Road. Other very panoramic spots are the Vittoria Lighthouse, the Marian Sanctuary in Monte Grisa and the look-out point Tiziana Weiss, reachable from the Sage trail. The regatta is also broadcasted on television.
