THE KARST HOUSE
The house that best represents the tradition and the history of the Trieste Karst and its residents.
We are talking about the Karst House, a perfect example of the architecture of our territory. It is located in Repen, which is part of the municipality of Monrupino. Its current appearence dates back to 1831. In 1968 the house was purchased by the members of a cooperative called “Our Karst”, who took care of the renovation of the property and its equipment, collecting original furniture from the locals.
The house is developed on two levels: the ground floor features a kitchen and a cellar, whereas the upper floor is used as sleeping area with a room that serves as a granary. Amongst the typical elements of karst houses, the property presents walls and the windows in the typical square shape, both made of stone, of which the karst territory is rich. Stone slabs were also used for the roof that features a big chimney. The residence also presents a traditional terrace that is connected to the ground floor by external stairs. In the courtyard you will notice a beautiful stone well.
The Karst House has been converted into a museum that can be visited every Sunday and on every public holiday from April to October. Some of the inner spaces get often used to host interesting art exhibitions. The courtyard usually doubles as setting for various shows, concerts and ceremonies that evoke the traditions and custome of the locals. Among them the most awaited and attended is the Karst Wedding, which takes place every two years on the last week of August. It resembles a typical wedding ceremony that was followed on the triestine karst, transforming the entire village into the scene of a great popular festival.
