GEMINA TRAIL

A route suitable for everyone, ideal for discovering the thousand wonderful facets of the Trieste Karst.

We are talking about the Gemina trail, a 17-km long itinerary that allows those who undertake it a full immersion in the Karst territory. The path begins a few steps away from the main square in Malchina, Duino-Aurisina. It continues then through various typical karst villages such as Precenico, San Pelagio, Prepotto, Ternova, Samatorza and Sales, and ends up in Sgonico. The whole trail offers its visitors unforgettable rural views.

The direction of the itinerary is well traced with numerous arrows. Similar marks are used also to indicate the “osmize” and farmhouses, where you can stop for a break and taste the typical local products. During the walk it is also possible to visit some workshops of local artisans and discover wonderful plants and animals that live in the area.

This road was already established in the Ancient Rome era. At that time, this was the main route that connected Aquileia to “Tergeste”, which was considered the gateway to the east.

The path is good for a nice walk, but can be cycled through too. You can even enjoy the ride on horseback which can be quite a unique experience to discover the beauties of the Trieste Karst in the tranquility of nature. The entire itinerary is available also online.
