MARIAN SANCTUARY IN MONTE GRISA
The Temple that reigns over the Gulf of Trieste.
We are talking about the Marian Sanctuary in Monte Grisa, built in the 1960s on the hill sharing the same name. The sanctuary sits at 330 m above the sea level, and offers its visitors a splendid view of Trieste and the Adriatic Sea.
Its unmistakable triangular shape is kind of an interesting choice for a Catholic church, and it’s the reason why the building has later been nicknamed “il Formaggino” by the locals, which translates into “the cheese triangle”.
After its opening, many pilgrims headed to Trieste to visit the church dedicated to Mary Mother and the Queen. In the 90s it was also visited by pope John Paul II.
When the sun is shining, people are very happy to allow themselves a visit to the Sanctuary, taking the opportunity to go for a walk on the Napoleonic way, which connects it to Prosecco and Opicina.
