BARCOLA

The district of Trieste between sea and breathtaking sunsets. This is Barcola, the most loved neighborhood on the outskirts of the city. When sun is shining, a walk on the promenade is a must for the people of Trieste.

The importance of this strategic residential area dates back to the Ancient Rome Era, which is highly evidenced by a number of archeological remains of the sumptuous Villa Giulia. In the 19th century the splendid seaview offered by this territory made a huge comeback as lots of new luxurious residences began surface in the area. Amongst these, the so called “House of Onions” or “Jakić house” in viale Miramare is probably the best known.

During the summer Barcola gets already stormed by people from the early morning: there are many who want to enjoy the breeze on the seafront, sunbathe and then cool off in the sea. The bathing area extends from the Miramar castle to the Pineta, going all the way through the Marinella, the California, the Molo G and the Topolini, that offer its visitors the chance to choose their very own preferred kind of “beach”. Numerous kiosks, bars and restaurants operate in this area.

Also, the worldwide famous Triestine regatta gets its name from this district, hence we talk about “Barcolana”. In October there are many tourists who reach Trieste to join the race or simply to enjoy the extraordinary view of the Adriatic Sea crowded with boats.

Barcola can be reached both from Sistiana via the Coastal road and from the centre of Trieste via viale Miramare. The public transport is also very frequent.
